17. Chinese Elm

 

Common Name – English Elm

Latin Name – Ulmus Sp

 

Height – 30 Metres        

English Elm species are deciduous trees that grow up to 30m and can live for more than 100 years. The bark is grey brown, rough and fissured and the twigs are finely hairy. The leaves are oval and toothed with a rough hairy surface. Flowers are dark pink to red and hang in tassels, appearing in February and March. The flowers develop into tiny winged fruits, known as samaras and these are dispersed by wind.
