23. Bhutan Pine

Common Name – Bhutan Pine            

Latin Name - Pinus wallichiana

Height - 17 to 22 Metres            

Elegant and mostly ornamental this tree is blue-green and conical with soft needles is a native of the Himalayas and was introduced into Britain in the early 1820’s. This is an evergreen coniferous tree that produces long twelve to eighteen centimetre bundles of needles in fives. Long slender cones, 32 centimetres in length and yellow-buff in colour are a feature of the tree.    

The timber or wood is described as being moderately, hard, durable, and highly resinous. Commercially, it is a good source of turpentine which, we all have used when decorating. In our British landscape the tree is highly valued because of its tolerance to ‘Air Pollution’.
