26. Tulip Tree
Common Name – Tulip Tree
Latin Name - Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Aureomarginatum’
Height - 12 Metres+ Spread – 8 Metres
The original tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) was first introduced from America in the 1680’s and is known in its land of origin as the Whitewood and can be seen to grow upwards of sixty metres in height. In the USA the wood is extensively, used in house interiors.
Differing from its original ancestor this particular tree was first introduced to the British Isles in the 1900’s and has leaves with yellow variegation that are most striking in spring. Being of a pyramidal shape and form this tree only reaches a height of between twelve to seventeen metres and is also bee-friendly. Flowering in May, the flowers are greenish-yellow and tulip shaped.
