29. Candy Floss or Katsura Tree

Common Name - Candy Floss or Katsura Tree

Latin Name - Cercidiphylum japonica

Height - 20 Metres                   Spread – 15 Metres

Introduced from the Far East in the 1880’s the tree is native to both China and Japan. It is particularly, noted for its sensational spring coppery green foliage and later in autumn when its leaves turn to yellow or pink. It is during this autumn period that a fragrant scent similar to ‘Burnt Sugar or Caramel’ fills the air. Flowers on this tree are somewhat inconspicuous, but can be found in early spring among the opening leaves of the tree. Fruit is borne in clusters and contains several winged seeds.

Whilst ‘Katsura’ trees are grown in this country for their ornamental value, in Japan the tree is also grown for its timber and is used both in construction and woodworking.
