Originating from the south-eastern United States in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi this medium-sized ornamental deciduous tree with spreading habit that grows upwards of 12 metres in height and has pale green handsome large broad-ovate leaves. In late summer the tree produces showy fragrant white bell-shaped flowers, marked with purple and yellow coloration, then these are followed by slender bean-like seed pods, which, have no edible value, but look like green beans. Although having no nutritional value, traditionally these beans where commonly, used in medicine 19th century American pioneers to treat ailments ranging from skin infections to conjunctivitis to asthma.
