9. Mountain Ash

 

Common Name - Mountain Ash

Latin Name - Sorbus aucuparia

 

Height - 15 Metres

Commonly known as a Rowan or Mountain Ash this somewhat small native tree can reach an optimum height of between 12 to 15 metres and is renowned for its profusion of red berries in autumn. Living upwards of two-hundred-years this tree is a staple diet of many birds, the berries of this tree provide much of autumnal sustenance the birds need to survive winter. After successful pollination of the white flowers by insects, the seeds of scarlet-red berries are dispersed by birds like Blackbirds, Mistle and Song Thrush, Redstart, Redwing, Fieldfare and Waxwing.
