UK Parliamentary General Election - 4 July 2024

Further to the announcement on Wednesday 22 May, the next UK Parliamentary General Election (UKPGE) will take place on Thursday 4 July 2024.

Registering to vote, absent votes, and voter ID.

If you are not already registered to vote, then the quickest and easiest way to do this is to go online at www.gov.uk/registertovote.  The deadline to register to vote in the UKPGE is 11:59pm on Tuesday 18 June 2024 - for more details about registering to vote click here (Register to vote - Gedling Borough Council)

You can apply online for a postal vote using the online government service(Apply for a postal vote - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)). The deadline for applying for a postal vote or changing any arrangements relating to your current postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

We can now provide estimate dates of the despatch of postals voting packs, as per below:

Please use this table as an estimate as to when postal voting packs will be delivered. If you are unsure whether they will reach you in time, it may be safer to apply for a proxy vote instead (this is where someone votes on your behalf at a polling station) but please note any changes to absent votes must be done by 5pm on 19 June.

You can also apply online for some types of proxy votes using the online government service (Apply for a proxy vote - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)). The deadline for applying for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

The UK Government introduced a requirement in 2023 for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station at all elections in England – this requirement will apply again at the UKPGE.

At these elections you will need to bring acceptable photo ID to be able to vote at a polling station. Those voting by postal vote do not need to provide ID as separate security measures are already in place for voting by post. If you do not have an allowed form of photo ID, you can also apply online for a free VAC - Voter Authority Certificate here (Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)). The deadline for applying for a VAC is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024
