Carlton Square works start

Date Posted: 1:28 PM on Fri, 25 June 2021 Carlton Square Small

The redevelopment of Carlton Square has begun following the approval of the contractors and confirmation of a successful funding bid for £350,000 of external funding.

Gedling Borough Council has confirmed that Lindum Group is the appointed contractor to revitalise the shopping centre car park and pre-construction works have now begun on site.

This coincides with the announcement that the D2N2 will provide £350,000 to the project from its Local Growth Fund through the locally managed N2 Town Centre Programme. The D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is one of 38 LEPs across England. D2N2’s private sector-led Board represents business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and voluntary and community organisations. It promotes economic growth and jobs creation in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire; using UK Government and European funding. Its website is at www.d2n2lep.org

Works will include a new entrance to the car park from Burton Road and a new car parking layout in the northern car park, including identified spaces for electric vehicle points. There will also be safer and improved access between the car park and shopping area including a new pedestrian route to the shopping centre from Burton Road. HGV traffic will also be separated from visitor traffic by the creation of a dedicated unloading area.

In preparation for the main works starting, the Council has already begun some enabling works, with others in the pipeline, which include:

  • Works to the trees in the southern car park and further planned works to the planted areas
  • Repainting of the bench and bollards close to the Farmfoods and provision of new bins as part of scheme
  • Preparation works in the northern car park including boundaries
  • Removal of graffiti from Carlton Square building

As part of the council’s plans to reduce carbon emissions and improve air pollution in Gedling, they will be installing a number of Electric Charging Points in the centre car park.

The council successfully applied for additional grants totalling £100,000 from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles to install charging points in Carlton Square. There will be eight EV charging point bays to use by anyone during the day and local residents will have access to charge their cars overnight, with no car parking charge, from 6pm until 8am. The site was chosen due to its location and proximity to houses where there was limited access to off street parking making it difficult to install charging points on properties. The points are being installed with BP Pulse, operators of the existing GoUltra Low Network, who are also contributing towards the cost of installation.

Consultation on the plans took place during 2019 and 97% of people who responded to the survey agreed that it was important to improve the centre. The council also held a number of events in and around the centre to show shoppers and businesses the proposals.

The project is part of a wider regeneration programme for Carlton and it will contribute towards one of the council’s main priorities to regenerate its town centres and create a more vibrant economy.

The Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke said

“This is an important milestone in the redevelopment of Carlton Square. Congratulations to the Lindum Group who have won the contract and we are extremely happy to have been successful in our bid from the LEP for £350,000 for funding.

This money alongside £100,000 from Gedling Borough Council, will transform the look and feel of the square’s car park by the rationalisation of the northern car parking areas and the new entrance. It will also help boost the local economy and encourage residents to shop locally. It has been a torrid time for local businesses and we hope these improvements will offer them hope that things are getting better. I am also very pleased that we have secured funding for Electric Charging points that will be accessible to local residents to use overnight, we want to encourage more people to use cleaner fuels and this will help people when deciding if they want to buy an electric car.”

Sajeeda Rose, Chief Executive of the D2N2 LEP, said:

“Today’s announcement is great news for Carlton and the surrounding area and will provide a much-needed boost to confidence and recovery efforts for the local economy. We’re proud to support this project, and will continue to work in partnership across our region to deliver a healthy, green and inclusive economy for all.”
