Spring is in the air, and it's time to get ready for the Big Spring Clean. Gedling Borough Council has announced a series of events taking place throughout the borough until Sunday 12 March.

The Big Spring Clean is an annual community event aimed at improving the cleanliness and appearance of our towns and villages. This year, the council is asking for help from residents to make it the most successful yet. By taking part in one of our litter picks and bulb planting events, residents can make a real difference to the environment and show pride in their local community.

The spring events will take place at various locations throughout the borough, with each event lasting around 2 hours. The council will provide all the equipment, including gloves, litter pickers, and bags. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, get some exercise, and do something positive for the environment. Our Climate Change Officer will be organising a series of litter picking events with local schools and community groups as part of her work to raise awareness of Climate Change and the council’s ambition to be net carbon zero by 2030.

As part of the Big Spring Clean week, the council will be highlighting the issues around fly tipping, graffiti, dog fouling and other offences that take place in our town centres and villages. Neighbourhood Wardens and Street Cleaning Teams will be targeting hot spots areas throughout the spring clean week. A focus on clean air will also be an important part of the week, following the council’s recent introduction of penalty fines for people who leave their cars idling, specifically around schools. Wardens will be patrolling areas to warn parents of the dangers of leaving cars running when dropping off their children.

The events dates are:

  • Bulb planting at Digby Park, Mapperley Top on Friday 10 March from 2pm with Park Rangers and children from Carlton Digby School
  • Community Litter Pick, Lambley Lane – 11 March from 10.30am

Portfolio Holder for Environment, Councillor Ron McCrossen said:

“We're encouraging all residents to get involved in the Big Spring Clean, whether you're a family, a group of friends, or an individual. This week is also about highlighting the work done by the council to keep our streets clean, reduce fly tipping and raising awareness of the issues of air pollution around schools.

Together, we can make a real difference to our borough and create a cleaner, more beautiful environment for everyone. So let's get together, get cleaning, and make the Big Spring Clean the best one yet.”
