New scheme to encourage more people to cycle unveiled in Redhill

Gedling Borough Council has installed six new high security, steel bike lockers at Redhill Leisure Centre in Arnold.

 

Located outside the entrance to the leisure centre, the lockers are free to use and aim to promote cycling as a warm-up exercise before attending workouts at the centre. By offering a safe place to store bikes, it will help customers to focus more on their personal health and wellbeing.

 

These secure bicycle lockers also contribute to the Council’s ongoing efforts to provide eco-friendly alternatives to residents who would usually travel by car and encourage them to reduce their carbon footprint. Each of the lockers can store up to two bikes.

 

Nigel Hallam, a customer at the leisure centre, said;

“These secure bike lockers are a great initiative and a welcome addition to the leisure centre. I’m a regular user of these lockers now and if it encourages other people to cycle to the centre instead of using their cars too, then I’m all for it.”

 

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke MBE said;

“We’re delighted to have these bicycle lockers now installed at Redhill Leisure Centre. They will hopefully help Gedling residents to make positive changes in their own lives to be more physically active and it gives them somewhere they can confidently store their bikes while visiting the centre.

 

 

Deputy Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor Michael Payne said:

“This is another positive step forward with the council’s objective to become net zero carbon by 2030. If more people were able to swap their car for a bicycle when travelling locally, it would significantly help to reduce carbon emissions.”

 

The new lockers are operated using a key which can be obtained from the reception desk. Users must have a Gedling Leisure membership or pay as you go card. The customer’s leisure card will be held by reception when a person uses the key to put the bike in the locker and when they remove it at the end of their workout. When not in use, the key will be safely stored at reception.
