Community Spotlight: World War II Veteran Tom Knight

On Armistice Day 2024, it was a privilege to meet 98-year-old Tom Knight at the Killisick Friendship Group in Arnold.

Born in September 1926, Tom first attempted to enlist at the age of 16. After being turned away for being too young, he returned a few months later on his 17th birthday. Greeted by the same officer who had turned him away only months before, he was signed up and began a career of service that he looks back on fondly.

Tom served as a telegraphist, working in intelligence, communicating, and coordinating with warships. Reflecting on those years, he shared,

“I actually have many lovely memories of those years. The spirit of community and togetherness during that time was very special. I remember it very well.”

After his time in the Navy, Tom went on to run several pubs in Arnold, where he became a key member of the community. He still enjoys visiting one of the borough’s pubs for Sunday lunch and “a drop of rum.”

However, his time serving his country has always remained in his heart. Tom still knows Morse code to this day—an impressive skill that he enjoys sharing with the Killisick Friendship Group, where he meets every Monday. Tom and his friends talk, reminisce, and play a variety of games, forming a close-knit family in which Tom is a key member, held in high regard by all.
