Why become a swimming teacher with us?

Take it from our staff that teaching swimming is a fun, rewarding and flexible job. Here are just a few reasons why being a swimming teacher is one of the best jobs around:

Swimming teachers are in demand

The demand for swimming lessons is really high. We are helping those that have yet to learn the important life skill of swimming through a range of lessons in our Learn to Swim scheme and are often looking for more swimming teachers to help deliver the lessons.

The variety of swimming lessons and learners keep the job interesting

Our lessons cater for a wide range of ages and abilities, including babies and toddlers, children, disability lessons and adult lessons, as well as private tuition. The scale and variety of lessons means that you will be able to help many learners and stay motivated to think of new ways to teach and help individuals reach their potential.

It is a very rewarding job

The rewarding feeling that you get from helping someone to learn a life skill is second to none. It is always amazing to see a learner progress and achieve their goals, whether they are just starting out or aiming for club level.

Employee benefits

Gedling Borough Council offer a competitive salary, a generous holiday entitlement, an industry-leading pension scheme and an employee benefits scheme which includes membership to our leisure facilities at a reduced cost.

With a supportive environment we will encourage you to grow with training and development opportunities and you will also get access to our 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme to help you with financial advice and health issues.

Career progression

Once trained as a level 1 swimming teacher and lifeguard, you can progress to a level 2 swimming teacher/ leisure attendant. This is a fantastic opportunity to also develop your communication and leadership skills, especially if you’re looking to advance further into a more senior role.

You can use the skills and qualifications you have learnt to follow the tutor or assessor route and train future lifeguards and swimming teachers.

Train as a lifeguard or swimming teacher

If you are aged 16 or over, friendly, enthusiastic about helping others and have a passion for swimming, we can fund your training on the following courses:

  • Royal Life Saving Society UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
  • Level 1 Swim Teaching
  • Level 2 Swim Teaching

Subject to a character interview and availability, we can fund your course for you as you learn on the job. All you would need to do is volunteer the hours back when you become a qualified lifeguard or swimming teacher. The required volunteer hours will be 10 hours for lifeguarding, 10 hours for Level 1 swim teachers, and 20 hours for Level 2 swim teachers.

Swimming teaching assistants

Opportunities for training to become a swimming teaching assistant are also available.

Teaching assistants help qualified level 2 swimming teachers during swimming lessons. They help to support learners in the water, help with assessing and registering learners and help keep the lessons running smoothly and efficiently. Teaching assistants can then go on to achieve their swimming teacher awards.
